APPRECIATE

A sunflower doesn’t try to be a rose.

It doesn’t apologize for not being a rose;
and it doesn’t make itself smaller to avoid standing out.

It doesn’t change the shape of its petals or the size of its seeds,
and it doesn’t grow thorns just because a rose does.

It doesn’t shrink itself or sharpen itself to fit in with the flowers that are different, simply because some people love roses. Instead, it stands tall, proud to be itself.

Because the sunflower knows that there are people out there who love the tall things, the yellow things, the bright things, and it knows that these are its people: the ones who will see it and appreciate it for who and what it is.

Yes, there are people out there searching for a sunflower to love; to cherish; to treasure.

And the sunflower knows
that its people will never find it,

if it insists
on looking like a rose.
