After Jesus was laid in the tomb, a deep silence descended upon Calvary. The disciples were filled with fear and sorrow, and the future seemed uncertain. Yet Mary remained rooted in faith. She waited.
Mary had received the promise of God from the very beginning. She had heard the words of the angel and had treasured God's mysteries in her heart. Even now, when everything seemed to have ended, she continued to trust in the faithfulness of God.
Mary had witnessed the suffering and death of her Son, but she did not allow sorrow to extinguish her hope. In the silence of Holy Saturday, Mary awaited the dawn of the Resurrection.
Her waiting was not empty or hopeless. It was a waiting filled with faith, prayer and trust. She knew that God's promises never fail, even when their fulfilment is hidden from human eyes.
We too experience moments of waiting. We wait for healing, for reconciliation, for an answer to prayer, for a change in our circumstances, or for a new beginning. Sometimes our waiting can become filled with anxiety and discouragement.
Mary teaches us how to wait—with faith rather than fear, hope rather than despair, and trust rather than anxiety.
The tomb reminds us that God can bring life out of what appears to be an ending. What seems like defeat can become the beginning of something new. What appears to be darkness can prepare the way for light.
Today, let us place our unanswered prayers and unfinished stories into God's hands. Let us learn from Mary to wait patiently for God's time.
Let us ask ourselves:
What am I waiting for today?
Can I trust God even when I cannot see the answer?
Do I have the patience to wait for God's plan to unfold?
May Mary teach us that waiting with faith is itself an act of love and surrender.
As we come to the end of this novena, may we carry Mary's hope in our hearts. When we face our own “Holy Saturdays”—those moments of silence, uncertainty and sorrow—may we remember that the Resurrection is coming.
Mary, Mother of Sorrows and Mother of Hope, teach us to wait with faith, to trust God's promises, and to believe that His light will always overcome the darkness.
