Holy Mother Church invites us to commemorate the **optional Memorial Mass of Saints Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs**, and to pay our respectful homage and tribute to these holy saints.
Our saints were **twin brothers** who lived in the third century. They were famous **Christian physicians from Arabia**. They were educated in science and medicine and served people **free of charge**, without accepting any payment, in the Syrian coastal regions under the Roman Empire and near the coast of Sicily. Because they offered their medical services without taking money, they came to be known as the **“Moneyless Ones”** or **“Unmercenaries.”**
In this way, our saints carried out a noble mission that earned the love and admiration of the people. They found great fulfillment and joy in serving the people and caring for the sick. As a result, they gained a permanent place in the hearts of those whom they served.
Many people were inspired by the sacrifices, holy lives, and healing ministry of our saints and became Christians. When the Emperor **Diocletian** persecuted Christians, Cosmas and Damian were also arrested. They were subjected to various tortures: they were stoned, imprisoned, crucified, tortured, and finally beheaded. Thus, they gave their lives as martyrs for Christ.
They are among the **early Christian martyrs**. Their names are remembered in the **Canon of the Holy Mass**, where we hear the names of the saints, including Saint Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint Cosmas, and Saint Damian. Their names are also included in the **Litany of the Saints**.
Many churches in the city of **Rome** are dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. Numerous hospitals have also been established in their names.
Saints Cosmas and Damian are regarded as **patron saints of surgeons, physicians, dentists, veterinarians, children, barbers, pharmacists, orphanages, child-care institutions, confectioners, and those suffering from hernias and infectious diseases.**
