Today, October 7, Catholics all over the world joyfully celebrate and honor the feast of **Our Lady of the Rosary**.
The title **Our Lady of the Rosary** is a name given to Mother Mary in connection with the devotion of the Holy Rosary, one of the cherished devotional practices of the Catholic Church.
In the 13th century, the **Albigensian heresy** was spreading false teachings among the people, causing weakness in Christian faith. St. Dominic prayed to Mother Mary, asking her to help protect the people from these errors. In the year 1208, at Muret, Mother Mary appeared to him and said that if the devotion of the Rosary—praying the Hail Mary while meditating on the important events in the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ—were spread among the people, the Albigensian heresy would disappear. St. Dominic therefore spread the devotion of the Rosary among Christians, and the false teachings that had disturbed the faith of the people gradually disappeared.
Later, in 1571, in remembrance of the Christian victory over the Turks in the **Battle of Lepanto**, Pope St. Pius V established the feast of **Our Lady of Victory**. It was believed that this victory was obtained through the continuous prayers of the Rosary offered by Christians gathered in St. Peter's Square in Rome, seeking the intercession of Mother Mary.
In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the name of the feast to the **Feast of the Holy Rosary**. In 1716, Pope Clement XI added the feast to the Roman General Calendar so that Catholics throughout the world could celebrate it on the first Sunday of October.
In 1913, when Our Lady appeared at Fatima, she introduced herself as **“Our Lady of the Rosary.”** In the same year, Pope St. Pius X moved the celebration to **October 7**, giving greater importance to the Sunday liturgy.
In 1969, Pope St. Paul VI changed the name of the feast to the **Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary**. This is the history of the Rosary and the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
The Rosary is a traditional vocal prayer encouraged by the Church and cherished by many saints. Pope St. John Paul II wrote an Apostolic Letter entitled **“Rosarium Virginis Mariae” (The Rosary of the Virgin Mary)**. In it, he describes the devotion of the Rosary as a **“true training in holiness.”**
The Rosary is a powerful spiritual weapon. It is important for us to pray the Rosary for world peace and to protect the holiness and dignity of family life. It is not a prayer that should be recited carelessly or without awareness. Rather, it is a prayer in which we contemplate Christ through the eyes of Mary, our Mother and the Mother of Christ.
Let us learn about one remarkable incident.
At the end of the Second World War, on **August 6, 1945**, the United States dropped an atomic bomb called **“Little Boy”** on the city of Hiroshima in Japan. As a result, approximately one hundred thousand people lost their lives.
However, at that time, right in the center of the city, only about one kilometer from the place where the bomb was dropped, the **Church of the Assumption of Mary** and the adjoining Jesuit residence survived the effects of the radiation. All the Jesuit priests who were staying there survived without any injury or harm.
The surviving priests testified to Our Lady of the Rosary, saying that they believed they had survived because they had lived according to the message of Our Lady of Fatima and that **their daily practice of praying the Rosary had protected them.**
Dear brothers and sisters!
In the Rosary, we meditate upon and contemplate the mysteries of our Lord's **birth, childhood, preaching of the Gospel, Passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension**.
It is the **meditation and contemplation of these mysteries** that make the Rosary meaningful.
However, we must never forget the great importance of the **Holy Mass**, which brings immense joy to our Mother Mary and the saints. The Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic Adoration, the Rosary, and pilgrimages are all devotional practices. But none of these can ever be considered equal to the **Holy Mass**.
The Holy Mass is the sacrifice of Calvary. **The Holy Mass is our life.**
If we become idle, Satan will seek opportunities to harm our souls. As the saying goes, **“An idle mind is the devil's workshop.”** At such times, we must not give Satan any opportunity.
The Rosary is a powerful weapon that helps us in such moments. Every **“Hail Mary”** that we pray with devotion is like a powerful hammer striking the head of Satan.
Therefore, **let us pray the Rosary and gain victory!**
Heartfelt greetings to everyone on the feast of **Our Lady of the Rosary**.
**Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, pray for us.**
