Focus: “Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it” (Lk 8:7)
When the West Asia conflict broke out, we were traumatised by prospects of nuclear disaster, economic doom, and critical shortages of fuel. The future seemed bleak. However, I was deeply touched by a homily about our lack of trust in the Lord, and about how quickly we submit to despair, despite our faith, our past experiences, and Christ’s promises. In theory, we know that we have a loving Father who cares for us. In practice, it is a different matter – we are more conscious of life’s cares or “thorns” (Focus) than God’s love
So true is the parable of the sower (Gospel). We know it practically by heart. Like the people listening to it 2,000 years ago, we too have worldly cares that prevent us from bearing fruit. ‘Cares’ comes from the Greek Noun merimna (worries or anxiety), and the verb merizo (to divide). We end up with our faith divided and our strength pulled apart by life’s anxieties. Our childlike trust in God’s protection is ‘choked’, and so our fruit fails to mature.
Abiding in Jesus rejuvenates our spiritual life. Hence, we are called to trust him unreservedly (First Reading and Psalm).
This month we are also reminded to save water, a vital resource in the regeneration of biological life (Prayer Intention).
Fruit: I will stay rooted in Christ, and his life-giving Spirit, to rise imperishable through the thorns of life.
