“Mary’s Strengthening Presence on the Way to Calvary”
The phrase “Mary strengthens her Son” beautifully expresses her loving presence, though she could not remove His suffering. Her courage, compassion, and presence strengthened Him in His painful journey.

Mary’s Strengthening Presence on the Way to Calvary
The road to Calvary was a painful and difficult journey for Jesus. His body was exhausted, His heart was burdened, and the Cross weighed heavily upon Him. Amidst the crowd, the noise, the hatred and the suffering, Jesus saw His Mother.
Mary could not take away His Cross. She could not stop His suffering. She could not change the course of His journey. But she could be there for Him. Her loving presence, her compassionate gaze and her silent courage became a source of strength for her beloved Son.
Their meeting on the way to Calvary was not a meeting of words, but a meeting of hearts. In that brief encounter, Mary communicated what words could not express: “My Son, I am with you. I will not leave you alone.”
Mary teaches us that sometimes the greatest strength we can offer another person is simply our loving and faithful presence.
There are moments when people around us carry heavy crosses—illness, loss, loneliness, disappointment, family struggles, failures and uncertainties. We may not be able to remove their suffering, but we can strengthen them through our presence, our prayer, our encouragement and our compassionate heart.
Mary invites us today to ask:
Do I become a source of strength for those who are suffering?
Do I remain with people when their journey becomes difficult?
Do my words and presence give courage and hope to those who are carrying a cross?
Let us learn from Mary to be people who strengthen rather than discourage, accompany rather than abandon, and comfort rather than judge.
At times, we too may feel exhausted on our own journey to Calvary. We may wonder how we can continue carrying our crosses. Let us remember Mary. She walks beside us too. Her presence assures us that we are never alone.
May Our Lady of Sorrows teach us to strengthen one another through love, prayer and compassionate presence. And when our own strength fails, may she lead us closer to Jesus, who gives us the grace to carry every cross with faith and hope.
Mary, Sorrowful Mother,
stay beside us on our journey,
strengthen us when we are weak,
and make us a source of strength and hope
to all those who suffer. Amen.
